Apple Spice Cake Cobbler – A Simple 3 Ingredient Dessert

This apple spice cake cobbler recipe makes a great camping dessert when cooked in a Dutch Oven over the campfire, or you can make it at home in a Dutch Oven or a skillet. We have made multiple variations of this dessert by switching up the pie filling and/or the cake mix. It’s fast and simple with very few ingredients, and you can get creative!

You can mix this up using yellow cake mix instead of spice cake, and cherry, strawberry, or other pie fillings. Root Beer, ginger ale, or sprite can be substituted for the cream soda. See what combinations work for your camping crew.

Try our other apple cobbler recipe, which makes a cobbler that is more like traditional apple crisp with a sweet crumb topping. This recipe was made in the Camp Chef Deluxe 12″ Dutch Oven. Equipment

  • 12" Dutch Oven or 12" skillet

Ingredients

  • 2 21 oz cans Apple pie filling
  • 1 box (18 oz) Spice cake mix
  • 1 can (12 oz) Cream soda You can also use root beer.

Instructions

  • Spread the 2 cans of pie filling evenly in the bottom of a slightly greased 12" dutch oven
  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix over the top of the pie filling.  Don’t Stir It!  But use a knife or spatula to even it out if necessary.
  • Pour the cream soda over the cake mix.  Again, don’t stir it.  But try to pour it so it’s evenly distributed over the entire cake mix.
  • Bake for 30-45 minutes using around 7 coals under the Dutch oven, and 16 on top. You may need more coals with some Dutch ovens.
  • If you are cooking over wood coals, just have more heat on the lid than under the oven, and keep an eye on it because it may cook faster.
  •  It’s done when the top starts to brown a little.
